I applied for acceptance in this competition last Dicember not really thinking I would ever be selected in the final group but here I am!! the show opens this Saturday and I am really thrilled.
 If you go back to my past posts RED.02/04/15  and Who's afraid... 31/05/14 you'll see that I did a series of paintings using the forms of the spinal column and the color red.  These are the paintings that I used in my application that asked for 5 fotos of my work.

The notice arrived a week ago and the the above foto was selected for the collective show along with the painting below which should be in the catalogue.

I say SHOULD because you never are really sure of these things! When I was notified and read the list of artists selected, my name was spelled sIlvia with an I the way Sylvia is spelled in Italy and I wasn't sure they were talking about ME.  Because, when I searched Silvia Teri on the web  I actually found 3 other silvia's. Not until I clarified things with the committee of judges could I believe they had chosen my work. There were 4 catagories : painting, photography,sculpture , and graphics. In each group 10 artists were selected and one of these 10 was winner.  I was "selected" and will partcipate in this group show.  The winner is awarded a personal show.
I brought the painting to the gallery this morning and am preparing for Saturday.
The show, by the way, will be held in "The Casa di Dante-Society of Fine Art" in Florence.

INVASION - SHOW OPENING TODAY, OCT.6, 2018 FLORENCE.

I am participating in a 'fun' show that opens today  at Giambo Studio, Corso Tintori 6, Florence. but I don't have any pictures.  WE are many many artists all  showing  work done on paper size 40x40cm.   The work covers the walls of the gallery side-by-side, a tapestry of sorts,  an "INVASION"!!

Not possible to upload fotos so I will take some tonight and post them tomorrow.

(p.s. I didn't even take pics of my own work,  Too much going on this month!) Try looking up Giambo Studio, Corso Tintori 6 , Florence. That could work.)

This show was organized to participate in the day dedicated to AMACI, Associazione dei Musei d'arte Contemporanea in Italia, ie., the Asssociation of Contemporary Art Museums in Italy. Still haven't got fotos (forgot my iPhone cause i was late and had to search for my umbrella!  It was a rainy day yesterday.)!!!!

Here it is. a foto to prove as I said the tapistry setting of all art work. One of mine is at top right, Black with orange INVASION.  Sorry.  Couldn't do any better than this.  As soon as I have my  work back I will make fotos.

New Season Show Update

The new season has opened and I am participating in a collective show in a small town on the way south from Florence toward  Arezzo.  Organized by Fabio Rocca, the gallerist who has my paintings in the gallery's collection in Florence. The show is in an historic mill "La Filanda"  in Loro Ciuffenna and the video, if it is finally uploaded, will show you the interior and the show.

The last show for this season. Open throughout the summer by appointment. At ART-ART

These paintings of mine are part of the  collective show at the IAC Gallery in Impruneta (FI) that will run until September when new activities will begin with the art group ART-ART. It will be open every day by appointment. 334 9533394 
 

Show : Theme: Movement 1968, at ART-ART Gallery, Imruneta, Italy.

This is an installation  of work that I  presented in a recent show at the gallery ART-ART in Impruneta, (FI) Italy.  The theme was reflections on the revoluntionary movement of the '68ers.
I chose the feminist aspects of the movement, the radical change in the role of women in society, the new sense of liberation in the attitude of  women toward themselves and their potential.

This is the entire installation: four paintings using oil and cold wax and four prints, mostly etchings recalling the various stages.




 This is the first painting to the left depicting the woman, a prisoner of the roles inflicted upon her by society with no freedom of thought or movement of her own.

This is the center painting, a diptich, oil and cold wax on canvas, represnting the conflict within the movement.

 

 To the extreme right, the third painting represents an exhuberant final freedom, a wild, uncontrolled dance with figures undefined, a victory- non-victory.

Below  are the  prints that I hung above the paintings to underline  the stages of the '68 movement.

Whiite + White

After a sucessful show using only black and white,  the next challange was white + white. NOT an easy thing to do but fun trying. I'm posting the final results......

BLACK AND WHITE

A stack of 25x25mm wood panels ready to be primed. 

 My new project is in preparation for a show in September with the theme of BLACK and WHITE and so my basement studio is working out fine. It hasn't any windows. A dark studio is not my first choice of spaces to work in because I love light, I NEED light.  But I don't have much choice until the heat dies down.

Starting to play with forms and textures on panels.

All the panels have been primed and are ready.

 As I play with  Black and/White, I'm using all kinds of materials, paints, Inks, charcol, chalk, and an idea is forming in my mind.  Since this show will be then used as a collective work for another art show in the Spring, "Il Libro d'Artista",  my panels are taking on the role of pages that present the characters in a story. I'm just toying with this idea now but  it will probably continue.....

Moving underground

I don't know where to begin . . . it's been  a while since my last post and a lot has happened. Let's start from NOW and see where things go.....

Here in Florence (Italy) the summer temps have been torrid to say the least. The weather forcasters have baptized the heat wave with the name "Lucifer"!  That should give you an idea of what we wake up to every morning. High 80's...90's and humid, very very humid.

So,  I've found it  hard to concentrate and to work.  

The other day, annoyed  with myself, I finally decided to pull out of this by moving underground.  That is, to the cool depths of our basement.

CHECKING IN

After a little more than a year I'm back with  a new post.  This has been a busy and satisfying year for me, ... and... my painting. Many shows, often using older paintings but, now,  a new show ending tomorrow after a three week run. 

 The interesting theme of this show was "The Artist Incountering Himself "

I began with work that demonstrated my beginnings: work with the human body, drawing from a live model, use of various materials, etc...

  The geranium, the watercolor below, not my usual human body, here because it marked my first real show away from home and far from the usual scholastic atmosphere of "end of year" shows. It was held in the Botanical Gardens of the University of Pavia in northern Italy and changed my entire outlook and aims in painting. 

This painting is part of a series which used the 7 chakra or energy points as theme. I was searching for a cure for severe back and spinal pain in alternative medicine, massage, homeopathic cures when I came upon  the chakra which each have their own color and position in the body.

 This next painting is on a wooden panel using oil and cold wax as technique. This requires a hard surface in order to apply many layers and scrape and scratch over it all. 

This final painting, actually two together (dyptich), is the newest work after months of negative studio time. Still my figures but stretching out to the four corners of the canvas as if wanting to escape, to fly.

Making Decisions

Decision making is part of our everyday life. We begin in the early morning and continue throughout the day making one after the other of decisions that govern our lives.  They’re turning points. Most not drastic but some decisive and able to change the corse of our thinking and behavior.
Remember my last post, in January, I vowed to make reforms in my painting habits and schedules and  I was convinced that from that new year’s day on I would create a disciplined life for myself in the studio.

INSTEAD I have been delving into a variety of activities. First, I have become an “Angelo del Bello” (translated, that is an Angel of Beauty). NO, nothing to do with beauty contests, make-up and the like! It’s a volunteer organization that helps keep the parks in the city of Florence clean, erases ugly writings on walls and in the streets. I work in the famous Iris Garden overlooking Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo.

 I have also joined the newly formed choir within the American International League of Florence.  We are eight women (sometimes more, sometime less) and began this group to entertain at our annual Bazaar, a fundraising event to support needy charities in Florence and province.We worked hard to be presentable for December 8th (the date of our charity market),  to learn the carols, music and words, and we did it  as a flash mob  having a lot of fun. It meant many practices which consumed my days completely. The choir has continued, and so have I, learning  new songs thru weekly practices.  We will be entertainment during parties at old folk’s homes.

My painting in the show at Chianciano Terme, a SPA town south of Florence. was awarded Honorable Mention. This show closed at the end of March but I have been invited to continue with this painting and 2 others in another show in Montepulciano..  These are all historic picturesque  towns south of Florence.

Transparency - Figure

"Transparency"

I began this post talking about decision making but I never explained myself.  Remember? In February I applied for a show here in Florence entitled  “ Portraits of MERCY in the Bible” reasoning that at least I would be showing in Florence, nearby. I’m not a painter of sacred art as such but I participated anyway. Part of the regulations for this show required me to select a passage from the bible that I used as inspiration. Again I chose a painting from the past.

"The Annunciation"

 “The Annunciation” I have always considered this  as an annuciation, benevolent, protective. The Magnificat. But, as I searched the Bible, reading various passages, I realized how little I knew about this book of history. My decision was to find out more, read more from the bible, and,have founded a bible study class that meets from time to time.  A new source of inspiration for me.  A turning point?

AND, last of all, I will return to Pontremoli for their show on the 25th of April. 
Here I will present a new painting, a “new painting” done over an old study of a nude.  The theme is “The Garden”. and my painting is entitled “Waiting for Dawn.”
